The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit

1. Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. Like Christ, He has divine names, divine attributes, and divine power. Therefore, He should never be referred to as “it” (Matt. 28:19; 2 Cor. 13:14).

2. What day is associated with the coming of the Holy Spirit into the world?

The day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1ff)

3. What are some symbols of the Holy Spirit found in the Word of God?

a) Wind (John 3:8).
b) Dove (Matt. 3:16).
c) Water (John 7:38-39).

4. What is the work of the Holy Spirit to the saved?

The Holy Spirit has a five-fold ministry to the saved:

a) He regenerates (Titus 3:5).
b) He indwells (Rom. 8:9).
c) He baptizes (1 Cor. 12:13).
d) He seals (Eph. 4:30).
e) He fills (Eph. 5:18).

5. How do we obtain these ministries?

All believers are regenerated, indwelt, baptized, and sealed with the Holy Spirit at the time of salvation. These ministries are unconditional, are never to be sought, are never to be repeated, and are never rescinded. The filling of the Spirit, on the other hand, is to be sought, is conditional, and is to be constantly repeated. (See references for No. 4).

6. What is the Spirit’s ministry to the unsaved?

The Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8-9).

7. What sins can be committed against the Holy Spirit?

He can be resisted, grieved, and quenched (Acts 7:51; Eph. 4:30; 1 Thess. 5:19).

8. What are some of the names by which the Holy Spirit is called?

He is the Comforter, the Spirit of truth, the Spirit of faith, the Spirit of grace, the Spirit of holiness, the Spirit of life, (John 14:17; 2 Cor. 4:13; Heb. 10:29; Rom. 1:4; Rom. 8:2).

9. What characteristics of personality does the Spirit possess?

He possesses the three necessary to any person:

a) Knowledge (1 Cor. 2:11).
b) Will (1 Cor. 12:11).
c) Emotion (Rom. 8:27).

10. What particular sin did Israel commit against the Holy Spirit?

The sin of blasphemy (Matt. 12:31-32).

MEMORY VERSE: JOHN 16:7-8
